Robert Wilbert Project
In 2009 Detroit Focus received a grant from the Michigan Council
for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, which included money from
the National Endowment for the Arts. The purpose of the funding
was to create a publication about artist Robert Wilbert and
his impact on the artist community during his 38-year career
at Wayne State University. [For

The book is a full color publication , sumptuously photographed
by Dirk Bakker, the former Head of the Detroit Institute of
Arts Photography Department. All information in the text came
from primary sources approved by Mr. Wilbert. The essays reveal
an art practice that is comparable to nationally recognized
American artists of the 20th century.
The book will lead to new understanding of an art practice
that requires visual rigors, discipline, and creates wider
possibilities for artists and teachers by its example.
