Originally from Dallas, Baird has had a thirty year career as a photographer and teacher, including twenty years in commercial photography as an architectural, advertising, and editorial photographer. After studying at the Naval School of Photography, he earned a BFA from Southern Methodist University followed by an MFA in Photography at University of North Texas.
His first love was always art, especially the photomontage imagery of artists like Jerry Uelsmann. Although Baird's involvement in digital processes began as a way to add value and visual effects to his commercial work, he soon converted to digital photography. Since then, his work has appeared in numerous publications and exhibitions. Baird is now an Assistant Professor of Art at University of Michigan-Flint, where he helps develop graphic design and photography programs.
